1) It offers an interface similar to gnome-vfs, so that I can read and
write files over http, ftp, and sftp. Other protocols, like ftps,
would be nice. I don't want just a socket library.
2) Works on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. Other Unices would be good
(e.g. AIX, Solaris). It should be small enough that I can create a
self contained executable and distribute that. This is where
gnome-vfs fails.
Right now, the leading contender is libcurl plus libssh, although I am
unsure about how portable libssh is. libssh will need some additional
work anyway.
