Cool thanks,
(query-replace-regexp
"\\(?:\\\\nv{\\([[:alnum:]]*\\^[[:alnum:]]*\\)}{\\([[:alnum:]]*\\)}\\)"
"\\\\|\\1\\\\|_{H^{\\2}}")
Did what I wanted!

I used
(regexp-opt '("\\nv{[a-z]*\\^[a-z]}{s}") t)
which was not helpful.
How do you use re-builder
(re-builder '("\\nv{[a-z]*\\^[a-z]}{s}") t)?
Oops, I see that it should be called interactively and it seem not to
work properly in Xemacs.

Once I understand how to use re-builder, I try to get it to work
for xemacs. If not I must use Mose's solution.
Thanks
