I have difficulties understanding your request.
Take the following example:
\documentclass[12pt]{article}
\begin{document}
\cite{christodoulou95:_self% Demetrios Christodoulou 1995
}
\cite{uwe}
\bibliographystyle{amsalpha}
\bibliography{bibgraf}
\end{document}
Using bibtex (which indicates that the reference uwe does not exist) I
obtain a pdf file whose screenshot I attach.
Clearly visible is there a question mark indicating that something is
wrong/missing.
