Oh I forgot about these. I also use them all the time (especially 
`attach-tex-output`) but I have them in my personal config rather than in 
AUCTeX.

These functions use AUCTeX functionality rather than modify it so they don't 
strictly have to be part of AUCTeX. Nevertheless, I think these functions are 
useful in general (with or without TeX-output-dir) and I am happy to include 
them as a separate contribution if others agree.
