a problem with LaTeX-fill-environment

Please consider 

  \begin{equation*}
    f(x_{c}):=   \left.       f(x)  \right|_{x=x_{c}}
  \end{equation*}


When I run LaTeX-fill-environment
I obtain 

  \begin{equation*}
    f(x_{c}):=   \left.
      f(x)  \right|_{x=x_{c}}
  \end{equation*}

Which looks odd to me. Can somebody confirm this?
