I know.  I looked at the Debian bug report after the message from
Andreas arrived.

LaTeX Math mode is not really an input method because it's not for
entering non-ASCII characters (as the Elisp manual characterizes input
methods).  I'd have to get more acquainted with input methods in order
to decide if turning the mode into one makes sense and is feasible.
