Hm, with a quick internet search I could not find much documentation
either.  But the search revealed a discussion on the AUCTeX development
list earlier this year:

The main problem is that Evince uses a Dbus interface for the
synchronization for which we don't have support in AUCTeX yet.  If
somebody wants to work on that, please do.  (An alternative would be to
add a command line interface for specifying the editor to Evince. (c;)
