Back at my home computer.

Emacs version is a pre-compiled bzr snapshot dating to 23.12.11.  But
thanks to your advice regarding the PATH, I realized that some part of
my .emacs configuration (stemming for a GNU/Linux system) sets a custom
PATH inside emacs (à la /usr/local/bin et al.).  Since MiKTeX's bin dir
is present in the Windows PATH, it works now without setting PATH inside
emacs.

Thanks for your advice.  The issue is solved.
