Hm, indeed.  `TeX-latex-mode' indeed runs the hooks before setting its
mode name, so if a hook function errors, the mode name won't be set.
It's the way it is because the mode name also indicates the active minor
modes, e.g., LaTeX/PS, which you could enable/disable in the hooks.
