Though being able to work-around the *_DATA issue with
install-data-local and uninstall-local to install and uninstall these
files, I have not found a way to get  'make distcheck' functional.

However, 'make distcheck' works with my hacks to distdir.am. It seems to
be the DISTFILES-loop and the quoting issues therein which seem to cause
the problems.
