I'm not opposed to renaming it AC_AUTOCONF_VERSION; it's a bit longer, but
still fits the bill, and you are right that it makes it more obvious
_what_ is being versioned. We haven't released yet (either automake or
autoconf), so we still have that option. Should we go ahead and rename
the autoconf macro now?
