I purchased one and played with its JTAG debug capability using AVR Studio.
It is way faster than serial port JTAG debuggers such as the JTAG ICE.
Installation was a breeze.  The "prototyping area" is a joke.  It is for
mounting a ZIP socket for your favorite DIP microcontroller so that you can
program it.  Nothing more.

Download and install AVR Studio 4.12 service pack 4 and use the on-line
documentation.
