I had never noticed that, and had always assumed the term was "depreciated",i.e., the "value" of the feature in question gets reduced until it is worthless and then removed. www.dict.org gives the meaning of "deprecated" as "prayed against, as an evil", which seems much more suitable :-)
FWIW, my dictionary (American Heritage) lists the meanings of "deprecate" as "to express disapproval of" and "protest or plead against" for the first entry, and "depreciate" for the second. A usage note says the second meaning probably came about because the words look similar, rather than any similarity in their basic meaning ("depreciate" means "to lessen the value of" or "belittle.")
