I just committed the attached patch to the twidemo example project.
It allows running the demo off the default 1 MHz calibrated RC
oscillator, albeit at reduced TWI speed only (compared to the goal of
100 kHz), due to the required minimum value for TWBR as per the
datasheet.

I tested it on an ATmega8.
