I relies on a good TeX installation, which would add more overhead.
IMaxima, to the best of my knowledge, just provides a (very) nice
running Maxima; it doesn't do any of the other things (such as help
with debugging or help writing code) that Antoine suggested.

I know that someone is working on Emacs-Axiom interaction, but I
wouldn't mind working on some sort of IAxiom that could later be
absorbed.
