[Axiom-mail] TeX vs LaTeX output on AXIOM

I'm new to AXIOM, and have just built the download version on SuSE
Linux 8.1

I've been comparing the output of the tex function from this AXIOM build
with that given in Jenks & Sutor pg 103.

The output I get uses 

$$, \over and \sp,  (ie TeX)

rather than the expected

\[, \frac and ^   (ie LaTeX)

The command latex (just a guess on my part) returns a "not implemented"
error. Is it possible to have AXIOM produce LaTeX output?  If so, how?
