You need to set metaSendsEscape. It can be configured in X resource
or switched in run time from the menu under Ctrl-left click.
By default, Alt in xterm is marked by setting 8th bit (i.e. in Latin-1
or UTF-8 locate, it literally sends the character รก for Alt-a) while
atk expects ESC prefix.
