Done. The CVS version now does this.
What format does preview-test.1 have? Apparently the inclusion is PSFILE=preview-test.1, but it seems that gs does not handle itgracefully, or needs some extra info to do the right thing. Now that you mention that ... I think this is to be expected. preview-test.1 is MetaPost output, ie, very simple EPS. But all font references use only the TeX name, no fonts are included. IIRC it is possible to register the TeX fonts with gs so that gs can cope with MetaPost output directly. But I haven't done that, since dvips and pdfTeX do the right thing. So it looks natural that a direct call to gs fails, whereas dvips plus gs works.
Ah, driver-specific behaviour. I've tested this and indeed, gs says "undefined in cmr10...". Not much I can do about this unless I'd want to put in full ps font inclusion into dvipng. I'd say the fallback of preview-latex is not so bad in this case, no?
