Please read the Bash FAQ, question E11.why is "checkwinsize" disabled by default? Does it have native side-effects?Because not everyone wants it.
Again: why would anybody not want it? The best reason would be negative side-effects, but you didn't mention any. So you could have kept everything like it is for bash 2.x, but could have changed the default for bash 3.0, but now that it's realeased ...
