The new macro parameter expansion rules break macros like
.macro assign register bit value
\register.\bit = \value
.endm
The manual suggests to use .altmacro instead.
However, the undocumented \() would also work
in regular mode and be backwards compatible.
E.g. replace above
\register\().\bit = \value
or
\register\(.)\bit = \value
Please document it (and re-word the entry about
& and .altmacro to make it a bit more readable).
