[Bug ld/9676] New: link-failure: could not read symbols: Bad value

during build a large c++ appliction based on stlport/boost linker reports:

these debug binaries were built with -O0 -gdwarf-2 -g2 -D_STLP_DEBUG=1
release binaries (-O2 -g0) link fine.
