Proposed (linker) patch

Hi Ma,

  Right - please try out this patch and let me know if it does what you want.

  The patch includes some fixups to various linker tests that would otherwise
trigger the new error message.  I am still running local regression tests
however, so more fixups may be needed in the final version of the patch.
