Long options can be abbreviated if unambiguous, so these are (currently)
equivalent, since no other long option starts with g:
ls --group-directories-first
ls --g
Furthermore, you can write a shell alias or function to automate your
favorite settings. For example, my .bashrc has:
alias ls='ls --color=auto -F'
(you may want to refer to a local Unix users group or better online forum
for help in writing shell aliases/functions for your shell of choice;
particularly if you use tcsh instead of bash)

Unfortunately, no. There are too many options and not enough letters for
every long option in 'ls' to be given a short letter; we prefer to use the
precious resource only for things that have been standardized or which are
pre-existing practice in other implementations of ls.
