Actually, I couldn't have validated them. Your mentioned .zip attachment
was not actually present; either you missed sending it, or the mail server
stripped it off. It is safe to send .gz, .bz2, or even .xz attachments,
but .zip tends to be used in propagating viruses, so I won't guarantee
whether it can make it through unscathed.
