I just recompiled 2.5 and 2.6 from scratch, as pulled off of ftp.gnu.org.

Just to be paranoid:
address@hidden:06pm]/usr/src/cpio(541) md5sum
/usr/mirror/gnu/cpio/cpio-2.[56].tar.gz
e02859af1bbbbd73fcbf757acb57e0a4 /usr/mirror/gnu/cpio/cpio-2.5.tar.gz
76b4145f33df088a5bade3bf4373d17d /usr/mirror/gnu/cpio/cpio-2.6.tar.gz

I had given the code a quick inspection before filing the original report,
but I did not see any obvious changes in that section between the two
versions (outside of the directory moves). It did not look like code
affecting the value of xstat changed at all.

I'll try running it through the debugger and see what I can come up with.

I'm running this under a Linux kernel 2.4.28 with glibc 2.3.3. However, if
it was a problem with either of those, I'd expect it to affect both 2.5 and
2.6.
