cvs dumps core file.. but gdb doesn't recognize that?

Hi, I'm working on AIX. I had an uneventful compile/install of cvs
with gcc. But when we attempt to use it.. we find strange 30 odd
megabyte core files in /tmp/cvs-<pid>.

Weird thing is gdb doesn't seem to be able to read them..
Any help will be much appreciated. I've included version numbers
below..

How can I go about debugging this? I'd like a working version of
CVS... obviously.

Thanks.
