It seems like I should have checked the bug repository first. This bug: http://ccvs.cvshome.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=44 contains a similar fix to mine. I think my approach where PAM takes over all system authentication is better, rather than the local getpwnam being used first and then trying PAM. Also the check for the local user existing is not necessary CVS checks for this already when it is necessary. Otherwise I can't see why one of these patches is not included in the standard CVS they are no worse than the standard system password checking mechanism. /Brian
