It wasn't so much a design decision as a lack of one. :-)
But anyway, Purify's definition of a memory leak agrees with mine --
it's allocated memory that you no longer have a pointer to. I haven't
run it on CVS recently, but it used to run the entire test suite, both
local and remote, with no memory leaks reported. I'm not surprised that
you're finding problems on the experimental branch (there have been a
lot of structural changes there), but I would be surprised if you found
any on the stable branch.
