Hi,
I am trying to get CVS working with PAM, and encountered a problem
that it seems should have been fixed by this patch

I am using cvs1-12-12, and it doesn't look as though the patch has
been applied to server.c in that package. Is this intentional?
Of course, I may just be confused...

The error comes also a result of misconfiguration. The patch should be
applied.
Have you followed the pam configuration details in the cvs manual?
In particular you need a /etc/pam.d/cvs with an appropriate configuration
including a session, authentication and account line.
