The filesystem on the device should not be mounted during the read. Gddrescue reads from the device and copies the filesystem - it does not use the filesystem to read the data. In fact, imaging a mounted filesystem may lead to an inconsistent image if you write to the filesystem during the read.
Do you mean that the usb device got unplugged during the read? Or do you really mean the filesystem unmounted?

Im not sure if this is a good idea or not, however
while using knoppix live CD, and using DDrescue, the USB device I was scanning unmounted, however ddrescue continued to scan. Maybe It would be a good idea to check that the device is still connected or add an option to check for this.
Thank you for such a good tool.
