Hi Jony. Both GNU ddrescue and GNU parted are on Ubuntu-Rescue-Remix. Including both those application in the default Live CD with graphical desktop would not help you since you would still have to run them from the command line. The problem is that there is no graphical interface for them. That being said, what exactly happened to the drive? You say there is a lost partition. If the partition is lost, there is no way to image it without imaging the entire drive. If the missing partition is the only problem and it was removed from the partition table due to error rather than hardware failure, then it is pretty much safe to just try to repair the partition table on the disk. Changing the partition table doesn't do anything to the actual data on the drive so the risk is minimal. I would recommend Testdisk to recover the lost partition if this is just a simple case of something deleting the partition from the partition table. Testdisk is easy to run the the command line.
