Hi Antonio & Matthew

"
>From the problems that you encountered, I'd venture a guess
that you recovered a vfat filesystem and didn't set the
character set ("code page") mount option correctly. I seem
to remember that NTFS stores this information in the
filesystem but it's very likely that I'm wrong about this.
In any case, code page mount options aren't related to
ddrescue at all and probably don't belong in its
documentation. A general "data recovery FAQ" yes, but this
is only tangentially related to ddrescue.
"

This is very likely the cause of the problem.
Thank you for solving it.

Suggestion ;
============

The manual at
http://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/manual/ddrescue_manual.html
has "6 A small tutorial with examples"
which includes the following paragraph;

"If you are trying to rescue a whole partition, first repair
the copy with e2fsck or some other tool appropiate for the
type of partition you are trying to rescue, then mount the
repaired copy somewhere and try to recover the files in it.
"

This is good because it discusses not just ddrescue on it's
own, but how it is used in combination with other tools to
carry out the complete task objective i.e. retrieving the
data.

The additional tools referred to are "e2fsck" and "mount".
There are other tools for checking file systems ( I hope to
list these in the help and/or procedure of a script I am
writing - but have difficulty sending to Antonio.

It would be helpful if there could be an addition to this
section of the manual to help international users, that says
something like the following;
"When mounting the file, be sure to use the code page option
for foreign language vfat (and ntfs? or any?) operating
systems"

Thanks for your help.
Yours
Al
