PS: If you are running Linux, have you tried the sgio_passthrough patch (I don't see it in your commands)? It can be used along with the features patch. There has been great excitement about the features patch, but I have heard nothing from anyone about the passthrough patch which came out beforehand. It would appear that no one is excited about something that can make ddrescue process errors 5 times faster.
I'm interested (although I'm not active in thes matters currently) and I would very much like to see this kind of progress merged into mainstream or into a well maintained branch that could contain code for conditionally compiled non-portable options as well.
