In what direction do you suggest to made the correction, upwards or downwards? And why limiting the correction to /dev/ ?
Maybe direct mode should not attempt partial sector reads, but then some sectors could remain untried after the rescue is "finished".
I think any automatic "correction" implemented in ddrescue would have bad consequences of some type.
