I'd suggest first trying a hair-drier to warm it up as a first route; because once you do the cold method on them it's probably going to be the last chance, as the condensation that forms on the platters tends to make a mess of the heads :\
David, does the machine show the drive and give a /dev/sdX entry? Does it reveal anything about the drive? Can you cut-paste what results it's showing out of ddrescue on the screen?
If the drive isn't spinning up then it could be a TVS diode failure on the rails (but that usually stops linux from seeing any partition information).
