Actually, the wikipedia article on the ARccOS copy protection that you 
could have ran into, specifically states that ddrescue can circumvent it 
due to its skipping of scrambled sectors:

However, if ddrescue does not report any errors on your 'known good 
disc', it indicates that this disc has no protection worse than CSS 
(i.e. no ARccOS). Having playback problems with that copied disc sounds 
actually troublesome and may require further investigation.
