This change is more complicated that it seems. For example, your example 
code would trigger the internal_error "can't change status of chunk spread 
over more than 1 block." if the first bad pattern is a prefix of the second.

Therefore I would like to see some feedback about how useful it is before 
spending the time required to implement it right.
