Right. So I agree it would be best if ed supported setting those
"common" envvars too.
plus, ed does not use a config.status script
That's a bug. config.status is mandated in the coding standards.
Anyway ...
so i imagine that's an outdated remark.
No, setting variables on the cmdline is the newer/preferred way.
Setting envvars is the older/unpreferred way -- but still supported (and
will be forever, I think/hope).
