Attila, I suggest you use the Gama sources from https://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gama/ version 2.09. Should you need the latest version from http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/gama.git, please simply uncomment line 20 in configure.ac and the program should build without a problem (let me know if it helps). Please also mind, that CMakeLists.txt build is only a subset of full GNU Gama build, namely in the test suites.
On my Debian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)
macro AC_CONFIG_MACRO_DIR([m4]) is available implicitly, which it was not in older OS versions (and thus I have to distribute it with Gama in subdirectory m4).

Gents,
Many thanks for the quick replies.
Greg, you're right, I forgot to give you details re the environment, sorry about that.
OS: Linux (dockerized, tried debian-slim and alpine)sources: bleeding edge from git
I've followed the official documentation, i.e. autogen, configure, make.
As I was having issues, I gave the cmake option a go and that way Gama compiled just fine.
Cheers,Attila

Sounds good.
I do not understand why it is not being found. I suspect there is some
other tiny problem someplace and the lack of local is making the error
manifest rather than latent.
