Follow-up Comment #1:
Which files exactly are you referring to? So far as I'm aware, the only
files which psppire creates in the current directory are pspp.jnl and
psppire.txt (and some png files if graphs are involved). Neither of these
are, what I would consider, temporary files. They are the desired output from
psppire.
Note, that even if psppire cannot write these files, it shouldn't cause any
serious problems (it shouldn't crash).
Can you tell us which files you're concerned about, and what problems it
creates for you?
