Follow-up Comment #1:

I fixed the use-after-free error by making REGRESSION ignore TEMPORARY when
SAVE is in use.  This is imperfect, but better than a crash.  I am leaving
this bug open, retitled and deprioritized, as a reminder to eventually fix
this.
