     Unfortunately  you didn't state which Operating System you used. I guess it
     is some MSWindows version. In that case it has nothing todo with PSPP but
     with the way your disk are formatted or the tools you use to view it. PSPP
     supports long filenames on MSWindows.
     Just have a look if you can create long filenames with editors or soemthing
     like that.
     
     If longfilenames work for other tools on the same computer ande the same
     drive, please describe the exact steps after which you have these short
     filenames.
     

If John is running syntax in the terminal under windows, there may be such an
issue which is not apparent on the gui.  I would have to check.

John, please state what operating system you are using, and what your use case 
is.

Of course, the problem will completely dissappear if you use a POSIX conformant
system, such as GNU/Linux instead of Windows.
