I agree with Bruno about the problems with getdomainname. To that I
would add a 4th notion: the "domain name" is whatever the resolver
uses to resolve host names -- the problem being that the resolver can
try multiple domain names (this is a common feature and is available
in the BIND resolver).

One data point: emacs/src/sysdep.c formerly used getdomainname, but
RMS yanked it in 1997 because NIIBE Yutaka said that it was not likely
to return the correct Internet domain.
