Hmm, but that patch was to xmalloc.c, though; why is it relevant to
syncing alloca.c with Emacs?

I tend to agree with Bruno here; I doubt whether any program other
than Emacs cares about this stuff. Even if some other programs need
it, I'd rather put it into a separate module. Perhaps we should just
leave the code with Emacs now, and worry about putting it into gnulib
only if some non-Emacs code needs it.
(I must confess to a vested interest in sidestepping this change; I am
campaigning to get rid of XFREE and xfree and the like.)
