My apologies for the false alarm.
Removing lib/getdate.c from my sources reproduces the bootstrap problem
without the BUILT_SOURCES line.
Once I remove an explicit `getdate_SOURCES = getdate.y' line (which
built the getdate test program) from my Makefile.am, I also see
getdate.c disappear from DIST_COMMON and the maintainer-clean-generic
target. Sounds like an Automake bug, alright.
