I agree. The URLs here are likely to be typed by hand and viewed
by users, so the shorter the better, and it doesn't matter that
much whether this results in two round-trips to the web server.
That's why I omitted the "www." and the trailing "/" in my
proposal. I guess we should consult the GNU webmasters to see
whether <http://gnu.org/licenses> can be made stable, but I hope
the answer will be "yes".
One other quibble. Instead of:
License: GNU GPL v2+ (see http://gnu.org/licenses)
I prefer:
License: GNU GPL v2+ <http://gnu.org/licenses>
as this is shorter, conforms better to Internet RFC 3986 appendix
C, and I think it will work better when the line is sent through
common email clients.
Obviously none of this matters all that much, so long as there's a
standard.
