I tested, too.
But not for bug-compatibility with older autoconf.

I understand autoconf quoting rules well enough to realize that
the transformation I performed is valid -- with new enough autoconf.
It looks like it is sometimes invalid with at least autoconf-2.61.
Since we still support autoconf-2.61, I've simply reverted the
changes to that file.

No big deal.
