Anonymous CVS is being provided by a gitcvsserver, which is:
a) not as full-featured as CVS itself
b) not fully tested (everyone prefers git itself, over the outdated CVS)

You may have more luck if you do a git checkout on a newer machine that
supports git, then copying the files over to the older machine (perhaps
via a networked file system).
