groff -Thtml produces signal 11

I am running the following version of groff:

GNU grops (groff) version 1.20.1

 

When formatting a large file for html output, I receive a groff: gtroff: Signal 11

report, and processing stops. When I format the same large file for ps output, everythig goes smooth. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong, and how to resolve the problem? Is it perhaps that insufficient memory is available? Many thanks in advance for your help.
