$ groff -ww -rXX=3D </dev/null; echo foobar
foobar
$ echo '.nr XX 3D' | groff -ww -rXX=3D; echo foobar
foobar


That 'D' is not a scaling unit--it's just nonsense.  We should complain, but
we don't.
